Echo Assembly Point
Southern Rhodesia
1979-1980

In December 1979, 159 Australian ground troops deployed to Southern Rhodesia to support British Forces in a Commonwealth Monitoring Force. This Force was to support the country in preparation for its first election in March 1980.
Zanu PF and Zanla forces were to assemble three months prior to the election into one of the eight Assembly Areas. Assembly Point Echo was commanded by Captain Michael Dinnison who initially had a team of twenty Australian soldiers under his command to monitor the Assembly Point during the Assembly Period. A further British Royal Green Jacket Officer and ten of his soldiers reinforced the Assembly point.
This Australian Flag flew at Assembly Point Echo for the entire period of the operation. It was finally taken down by Captain Dinnison as he and his troops departed the Assembly Point on 5 March 1980

The chair is whats classed as campaign furniture and has been around for thousands of years. This chair is dated around the early 19th century and could be seen anywhere in the old British Empire from India to the Crimea. Its function is two fold, one to be utilized as a lounge type seat and two as a bed. The seats cushioning is attached by hooks to the top of the chair which when lifted out can be laid down on the ground to be utilized as a mattress and if the chair is lowered by moving the central bolt down, the bottom of the chair can be used as a head rest. Also if the bolt is removed fully the chair flat packs for ease of transport.
